Cross-Country Finishes Off Perfect Season with Second DCSAA Title in Three Years
STA Athletics
The St. Albans Cross-Country team completed a historic season by capturing the 2024 DCSAA championship on a sunny, 65-degree day at Kenilworth Park Saturday. The Bulldogs entered seven meets this fall and finished first in all of them, frequently by large margins. After winning their 15th consecutive IAC championship a week earlier with all seven varsity runners finishing in the top ten, the Dogs turned their attention to recapturing the DCSAA title they won in 2022 but lost to Gonzaga in 2023. As with their six other 2024 races, the STA runners resolved to leave no doubt about their perch at the top of DC distance teams. With all five Bulldog scorers finishing in the top 9, they did just that with a team score of 25 points, 39 points ahead of second-place Gonzaga and 42 points ahead of St. John’s, which finished third. Seniors Will Strong and Sebi Hume paced STA, finishing second and third, respectively. Fellow seniors Liam Quinn (16:06) and Laszlo Wolfe (16:10) finished fifth and sixth, and sophomore Rafi Hume placed ninth with a time of 16:21.
At the 2K mark of the 5K course, Strong and Sebi Hume were in the lead pack of four runners with Gonzaga’s Anthony Sarro and overall race winner Karil Arnold of St. John’s. The other five Bulldog runners were within striking distance and setting themselves up to put a stranglehold on the team result. As the leaders came into view of the spectators lining the final 500 yards of the race, the lead pack was down to three with Arnold ahead of Strong and Hume. The St. John’s junior held on to finish with a PR of 15:16, and Strong and Hume, as they did most of the season, finished together with Strong placing second at 15:23 and Hume third at 15:24. As Strong and Hume cooled down at the finish line, they welcomed their teammates into the finishing chute and knew they had clinched the team title when Quinn and Wolfe crossed the line. Displaying STA’s depth throughout the lineup, sophomore Thomas Power (16:48) and junior Charlie Palmore (16:56) finished 15th and 16th in the 98-runner field.
The Bulldogs took second in the Varsity B race with junior William Cantrell finishing seventh (17:57) and three teammates – senior Sammy Miller (18:06), junior Humphrey Wolfe (18:07), and junior Henry Barnett (18:11) – in places 9 through 11. Junior Adna Gunja (17th, 18:35.80) edged classmate Willem Cohn by .09 to round out the
Bulldogs’ scoring. Sophomore Declan Hamilton finished first overall in the JV race in 17:19, leading a group of five other Bulldogs that finished in the top twenty of the 100-runner field. Freshman Gavin Tang (18:51) and sophomore Evan Campbell (18:57) placed 11th and 12th. Freshman Henry Hall (19:06) was 17th overall followed by sophomores Ray Hickey (18th, 19:09.30) and Kevin Shin (19th, 19:09.86).
