Teaching & Learning Program

St. Albans’ Teaching and Learning Program aims to cultivate a love of learning while helping students discover and reach their academic potential. The program works with groups of students, helping them sharpen the skills that will allow them to succeed at each grade level, with a special focus on the transitional years of Forms C, I, and III. Individual students with learning barriers and/or disabilities receive tailored lessons to help them find ways to thrive.

The school recently created an extern program to bring a cohort of doctoral students to campus to offer boys academic and counseling support as part of the Teaching and Learning Program.

STArt Smart and STAy Smart

STArtSmart, the Lower School’s after-school program, provides a space for students to complete their homework afternoons before heading home. Teachers review assignments with students, assist with their study skills, and offer one-on-one planning for short- and long-term assignments, test preparation, and studying. STAySmart is a study skills support program which helps students, either individually or in small groups, with their study skills.

Office Hours

Ask any student at St. Albans about the biggest key to success at the school, and you’re likely to hear the same answer: Go to office hours. We believe in empowering students to ask for help, pursue their academic curiosities, and advocate for themselves with their teachers. Daily office hours are available for 40 minutes after school and before athletics. It is common to see classrooms filled with students working through difficult problems with their teachers, meeting one-on-one in an office, or collaborating with classmates in a common space during office hours.

Mental Health Support

Director of Counseling Dr. Carrie Friend, Psy.D., supports students through one-on-one counseling, facilitating academic accommodations, or simply spreading positivity with her therapy dog, Bert. Dr. Friend helps students navigate complex social relationships and difficult conversations with teachers, and manage their emotions and feelings as they grow up. Mr. Ted Haley directs counseling in the Lower School and teaches a course called Decisions, which helps students navigate tough situations and questions of adolescence.
Located in Washington D.C., St. Albans School is a private, all boys day and boarding school. For more than a century, St. Albans has offered a distinctive educational experience for young men in grades 4 through 12. While our students reach exceptional academic goals and exhibit first-rate athletic and artistic achievements, as an Episcopal school we place equal emphasis upon moral and spiritual education.
