St. Albans celebrated the Lunar New Year this week with events hosted by both STA and NCS Asian American Pacific Islander Affinity Groups.
The week kicked off Monday in NCS Hearst Hall with after-school activities for all students, such as calligraphy, paper cutting, a dragon dance, dumpling making, and a variety of traditional foods.
On Tuesday, Upper School students gathered for an assembly hosted by the STA AAPI Affinity Group.
Led by Ms. Kinari Pierce, the group began their presentation with a quiz, asking students to recall from last year’s assembly how to say “Happy New Year” in Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Vietnamese.
To ring in the Year of the Snake, students enjoyed a live performance of the Legend of the White Snake, based on a classic Chinese folktale, by the Gin Dance company.
Shu-Chen Cuff, artistic director at Gin, preceded the dance with a retelling of the folktale—a timeless love story between a boy and a thousand-year-old snake disguised as a beautiful woman. Dating back to the Tang Dynasty, the legend has been retold in various forms over the centuries. Shu-Chen shared the version she grew up hearing with the audience.
Following the performance, Ms. Pierce and the AAPI Affinity Group led an engaging origami tutorial, challenging students to create their best paper snake to win a chocolate prize.
A big thank you to everyone who made the events this week a success!
