Founded in 1968 and named for the program’s long-time director, the Skip Grant Program offers academic and social support and guidance to St. Albans students from backgrounds traditionally underrepresented at the school.
A Skip Grant Program student receives additional monitoring, support, and, if needed, tutorial assistance to help him adjust to and thrive at St. Albans.

Glennard “OJ” Johnson ’97 serves as head basketball coach and director of the Skip Grant Program. After graduating from St. Albans, he received a B.S. in business administration from Georgetown University, where he also played varsity basketball and football.
Nathaniel Speights
Assistant Director, Skip Grant Program; Head Wrestling Coach
Hank Speights ’07 is assistant director of the Skip Grant Program, head wrestling coach, head JV football coach, and assistant track-and-field coach. Speights attended Trinity College in Connecticut, where he played varsity football and was a member of Trinity’s undefeated 2008 NESCAC team. Speights then embarked upon a career in high performance athletics, serving as assistant head coach at Whitfield Athletix in San Diego, Calif., the nation’s leading football quarterback academy for NFL, college, and secondary school quarterbacks. Before returning to STA, Speights earned an MBA from George Washington University.
