Winter Sports Wrapping Seasons

Championship season is in full swing across the Close as winter sports teams have been competing hard to bring a trophy back to St. Albans. Let’s check in on the latest with our teams.

Basketball:

Before heading into the IAC championships, the Dogs are set to wrap up their regular season with a match up against Bullis in a battle of the Bulldogs. St. Albans dropped their one matchup this year, but boast a 14-9 record and are coming off a strong showing at Landon to sweep the season series against the Bears. Seniors Kahu Treacher ’24 and Landon Mills ’24 were honored before last Friday’s final home game against Episcopal.

JV basketball is in the semifinals of the JV IAC championship, with tip-off set for 4:30pm today at Bullis. JVII wrapped up a wonderfully successful season with a strong 12-3 record, building a strong foundation for the program.

Hockey:

With just the MAPHL tournament ahead, the Ice Dogs are getting ready for next week’s matchup against Bullis. Having persevered through a season of injuries, the Bulldogs’ resilient squad will take the ice looking to avenge their previous competitive loss against Bullis earlier this season. Seniors Colin Bailey ’24, John Grennan ’24, Charlie Irwin ’24, Nils-Erik Kramer ’24, John Slidell ’24, Cal Schaberg ’24 were recognized for their contributions to the ice hockey program earlier this month.

Swim & Dive:

From Senior Day to multiple championship meets, February has been the busiest month of the year for the Bulldogs. On Wednesday, the squad dove into the water for the final time this year in the DCSAA championship. The meet featured multiple gold medal finishes for St. Albans, including two by Charlie Greenwood ’25 in the 100M breaststroke and butterfly and Ryan Albert ’25 in the 500M free. The team took home runner-up marks and the joint Close Aquatics coaching staff guided NCS to a first-place finish. The strong showing mirrored the IAC championships, where the Dogs took home the runner-up title with one of the closest finishes in recent years. Senior George Shaw ’24 was honored at the final home meet of the year against Sidwell.

Voyageur:

St. Albans climbing season wrapped up with a sixth place finish at the WAICL Championship. The season featured victories over McLean School and Bullis School. Led by Evan Sletten and Harrison Kintz, the season served as an excellent rebuilding year following the graduation of five out of eleven varsity climbers last year.

Wrestling:

The Dogs have the exciting opportunity to host the state championship at Martin Gym this Saturday. The varsity team will look to defend their home gym against foes from across the district.
