Winter Athletics Recap

The winter athletic season continues to heat up as St. Albans is competing well across five sports. If you missed the Winter Season Preview, check it out here.

Let’s catch you up on the latest action.

Basketball
Basketball heads into an exciting stretch of the season with matchups against Sidwell and Georgetown Day School. With a 2-1 record, the Bulldogs of the hardwood are coming off a strong showing against Friendship Tech Prep Academy in which the Dogs led at halftime but ultimately came up just short. It’s been an encouraging start to the season and Coach OJ Johnson ’97 writes, “The basketball program would love the entire community’s support at their next two upcoming home games. The Bulldogs will play neighborhood rival and nationally ranked Sidwell Friends on Friday, December 15, and another neighborhood rival, Georgetown Day School, on Saturday, December 16.”

Hockey:
It’s a big week for hockey coming off commanding victories against South River and Churchill. Persevering through multiple early season injuries, the Bulldogs have been relentless as they adjust on the ice. On Friday, the team will look to continue their win streak against Bishop O’Connell, before squaring off against Archbishop Spalding on the road on Monday.

Swim & Dive:
Make it three victorious meets in a row for the Dogs! The swim and dive program has now defeated Landon, Good Counsel, and Paul VI in a dual meet, and FUMA, Potomac, Seton, and Woodberry in another dual meet. That concludes the competition for the Dogs in 2023. The divers hit the water again on January 6, before the team squares off in the IAC championship on January 26.

Voyageur:
The program has started the season strong, having outclimbed Bullis and McLean to start the season but dropping their most recent matchup to The Heights. With a hiatus until the new year, Coach Velosky and the climbing crew will continue to train ahead of a matchup against Flint Hill on January 16.

Wrestling:
It has been a season of progress and growth for the wrestling team as it prepares for major competitions in the new year. With major tournaments ahead in 2024, the Bulldogs will use the rest of the month and January to prepare for the major tournaments in February: IAC and DCSAA.
