Treacher, Greenwood Representing Home Countries

Two standout Bulldogs recently had the chance to compete on the national level for their home countries. Kahu Treacher ’24, hailing from New Zealand, suited up for the U17 Tall Blacks to compete in the FIBA Oceania Championships. Charlie Greenwood ’25 competed in USA Swimming’s 2023 National Select Camp.

Treacher, the 6’8” small forward, was one of only 12 members of the team. He had a tremendous showing in the tournament — including a 16-point performance against Samoa, which qualified his squad for next year’s Asia Cup. The Tall Blacks reached the championship before ultimately falling to a strong Australian team.

As a Bulldog, Treacher was named a PrepHoops 3rd Team All DC member in the 2022-23 season. Head Basketball Coach OJ Johnson ’97 has nothing but praise to describe Treacher, saying: “I am so proud of Kahu for having the opportunity to represent his home country of New Zealand in the Oceania Championships. His passion, talent, and unselfish play on the basketball court helped make this dream into a reality. I was so happy with the way that he and his team played in the tournament. He did a phenomenal job representing his country, family, and St. Albans by helping his team qualify for the Asia Cup in 2024 . Kahu has been a tremendous addition not only to the basketball program, but to the entire STA community. Always displaying a big smile to go along with a friendly and outgoing personality, Kahu has embodied what it means to be a St. Albans Bulldog.”

Greenwood, who is ranked as the #3 overall swimmer in Washington, D.C., by Swimcloud, received a prestigious invitation to USA Swimming’s 2023 National Select Camp in Colorado Springs, Colo. USA Swimming is responsible for selecting and training teams for international competitions including the Olympic Games.

The camp features up-and-coming swimmers throughout the country and provides an exclusive training and educational opportunity for all athletes in attendance. Numerous National Team athletes and Olympians have previously attended the National Select Camps, including Katie Ledecky, Bobby Finke, Lilly King, Michael Andrew, Hali Flickinger, and Kieran Smith.

Describing Charlie, Head Swimming and Diving Coach Rich Bettencourt said, “All who know Charlie know how hard he works in, and out, of the classroom. All of us at St. Albans are proud of Charlie representing his club team and St. Albans at the USA Swimming National Select Camp. It is an impressive honor to be chosen from all the swimmers around the country to participate in this exciting opportunity. Not only is it a testament to his dedication, but it is a reminder to our community, and those thinking about sending their son to St. Albans, that excellence and competing at the highest level in athletics can be achieved while attending our school. We look forward to watching Charlie continue to develop and perform over the next two years before heading off to compete at the collegiate level.”

The two athletes will be competing together under one roof when winter sports begin in November — with Kahu in Martin Gymnasium and Charlie down the hall in the pool. This winter has the makings for must-watch competition when the two suit up to represent the Bulldogs.
