Welcome to the STArtSmart Study Skills Program in the Lower School!
STArtSmart, which parallels STAySmart in the Upper School, is a Lower School study skills program conceived and put into place by Linda DeBord, former Lower School academic dean. The program is currently run by Form B teacher Erl Houston. The goal of STArtSmart is to teach organizational skills such as note taking, time management and test preparation to the Lower School boys. Another aim of STArtSmart is to emphasize to our students that properly utilizing study skills can be a key determinate in their academic success.
If a student is experiencing academic difficulty, it is best to confer directly with his homeroom teacher (C,B & A) or advisor (I & II) and then he/she will direct them to STArtSmart.
It is important to note that students can have great success in the classroom, but still may not take a methodical approach to studying. While this may work in some classroom situations, many students can benefit greatly by examining their study environments and habits on a periodic basis.
The STArtSmart Program is open to all Lower School boys to strengthen their current skills, to identify ways they learn best and to introduce new methods which will enhance their learning.
